History

The Society of the Divine Word was founded in Steyl, Holland in 1975 by St Arnold Janssen.

Here are a few most important dates in the history of the Society:

8 IX  1875 

Arnold Janssen opens St Michael's Mission House in Steyl, Holland

1876

Start of the mission press in Steyl

1879

First two missionaries, St Joseph Freinademetz and Fr Jan Anzer, setout for China

1881

Mission in South Shantung taken over from Franciscans

1888

Opening of St Raphael's College in Rome

1889

Founding of St Gabriel's Mission House in Vienna

1889

Founding of the Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters

1892

Opening of Holy Cross Mission House in Nysa, Poland

1896

Founding of the Holy Spirit Sisters of Perpetual Adoration

1906

First issue of Anthropos, international review of ethnology and linguistics

1909

Arnold Janssen's death

1935

Opening of the process of beatification of A. Janssen

1949

Founding of Nanzan University in Nagoya, Japan
1975 Beatification of Arnold Janssen and Joseph Freinademetz
1999 Beatification of four polish SVD missionaries, martyred during World War II
2001 Beatification of Sister Helena Stollenwerk, co-founder of the Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters
